Research has revealed from the time we get out of bed in the morning until the time we retire at night 96 – 98 percent of our behaviors are ‘automatic habits’ that are performed with very little conscious thought! Even you’re thinking and beliefs are ‘automatic habits’.
These habits determine how well all the areas of our life work (financial, career, relationship, health, community, personal growth, environment etc.)
Something we need to be aware of is the results of our habits don’t always show up immediately but they do eventually give us a result.
- Excellent habits deliver ‘Excellent’ results
- Mediocre habits deliver ‘Mediocre’ results
- Bad habits deliver ‘Bad’ results
Your past habits are producing the current results in your life now! And your present habits will determine how your future unfolds!
Results of habits are very loyal and predictable – you keep doing the same thing and you will be sure to keep getting the same result.
The great news is because our habits are learned we can re-learn new and improved habits that will deliver new and improved results!
Aristotle the great philosopher understood this truth many years ago but we needed more concrete evidence like neurological research has provided before we would believe him.
“We are what we repeatedly do; excellence then is not an act, but a habit”
The bottom line is if you want to form a new habit you can. You can develop excellent or bad habits – you get to pick.
You can create habits to:
- Have a positive attitude
- Believe in yourself
- Be more productive
- Be more organized
- Manage your time better
- Create balance personally and professionally
- Be more healthy
- Look for solutions (stand in the solution and not the problem)
- Step out of your comfort zone
- Richly simplify your life
- Be 100% committed
- Have better relationships, experiences and outcomes
- Reach your full potential (identify, appreciate and develop the best of you, what you naturally do well and share it with those around you
- Set meaningful goals and reach them
- Identify, articulate and live out your dreams and desires
- Eliminate drama in your life
- Stop tolerating
- Raise your standards
Plus much more!
Just imagine what you could achieve if you committed to mastering one new habit a month – even mastering one new habit a year would make a significant improvement to the quality of most people’s life.
Utilizing some of the habitual willpower that resides within you and applying some disciplined effort these new and improved habits can soon become as automatic as your old and limiting ones.
We need to stay alert and pay close attention to the quality of the habits that are being formed because remember new habits are developed in a relatively short time frame and once they are formed they occur without much conscious thought.
Creating an excellent habit may require a little more time, energy and focus in the beginning than creating a mediocre or bad habit but after a while like all habits you won’t have to give it much thought at all! And once it is formed the results that follow will be worth the extra effort!
